Version 1.12.2 Announcement
Over the last few months we have been hard at work on WPBackItUp version 12.2.2. Today we are happy to announce that version for 12.2.2 will be available Thursday, March 10, 2016. We have completed all our internal testing and have submitted this release to our translators to translate into: Bengali, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Tagalog. If you are interested in translating WPBackItUp into your language then please contact at www.wpbackitup.com/contact.
Version 12.2.2 is a minor release so there are no major changes to the backup or restore process but we did include more than a dozen new features and improvements. Below we will highlight a few of our favorites.
Single File BackUp Set
For some time now our most requested new feature has been to provide a single backup file for your site. We are very proud to announce that this feature will be available in version 12.2.2. This feature will allow you to create a full backup that is contained in a single zip file. WPBackItUp will continue to provide separate backup files that contain the database, themes, plugins and uploads but this single file is all that is needed to restore or migrate your site.
The challenge with providing single file backups has always been that many hosts limit the amount of memory and processing time allowed for any task being performed. Creating large backup files is extremely memory and processing intensive, which is why we have resisted adding this feature. After speaking with many customers we have decided to add the single file backup as an option even though some hosts may prevent it. There will be no action necessary on your part to take advantage of this feature, however, your host may prevent its use. If this is the case then you will not see the single file backup download option as shown above. As before, you will continue to be able to download your backups in parts.
This feature will be turned on by default when you upgrade to version 12.2.2 but may be turned off if desired. To turn off this option, simply uncheck the Single File Backup Set option found in WPBackItUp settings. If for some reason WPBackItUp is unable to create single file backups with your host, then this setting will be automatically turned off.
User Experience Improvements
We have made a number of user interface improvements in this release. Below we will highlight a few of our favorites.
In previous releases you were required to reload the backup page to view new backups and to download them. Version 12.2.2 will display new backups directly in the available backups grid and will highlight the new backup. In addition, you will be able to click the backup set and download your backups without refreshing the page.
We have also included a new column to the available backups grid that displays the backup type. There are three types of backups available in this release:
- Manual: Backups that you run by clicking the backup button
- Scheduled: Backups that WPBackItUp runs based on your scheduled backup settings
- Imported: Backups that are uploaded to your site using the WPBackItUp upload tool
We have modified the backup page to include the WPbackItUp logo with a link review the plugin. This was added to make it easier for customers to post their reviews in the WordPress.org plugin repository.
We have updated the upload backups option to include an “Import Uploads” button. This button is used to notify WPBackItUp that you have completed uploading all your files and are ready to import them as backups.
When clicked the imported uploads will be displayed in the available backups section without a page refresh.
We have included some minor formatting improvements to email notifications and have included the WPBackItUp logo to make notifications easier to identify in your mailbox.
Other Improvements and Changes
Here are a few other updates we think are notable:
- Change database export to default to single export method after successful export of first table
- More graceful handling of images when restoring
- Fix invalid error message on delete backup
- Add site migration link to useful links
- Update job duration formatting to include hours for large sites and long jobs
